Final submission

The final post of this year’s blog is the project as a whole. The project which is based in the Villa Dei Quintile site is a repository to house the extensive collection of artefacts found on site though the years out lined in the brief. The project is highly influential in the regards to the monumentality of void, journey to discover and the visual relationship with the villa.

The repository is an open plan building exploding the definition of storage and display. The interaction between visitor and artefact is close observation with high regards to preservation. Plenty of natural light enters specifically designated parts of the museum and the air humidity is continually regulated creating a comfort experience of discovery.

The scheme

This page from my port folio pretty much summarise my intention for the project which is with regards to the monumentality of void, journey to discover and the visual relationship with the villa. The aspect of journey towards the entrance of the repository is being highlighted by a sculpture, which is the first step in the journey of discovery.

Important section for my project

As for the final pin up for the 10th of May there is a part of my design I’ve focused on which is shown in the section. This drawing cuts through my building to allow me to determine what size the pre-cast panelling wall might be and also what the wall as a whole might look like.

At the start of the drawing where you entre is the first precast render which is of the site plan which give the visitor a sense of the mass scope of the site. The second and much longer is the image of the villa as you would see it from approach. The highlight area of the villa is where mass excavation has been and where you should go when you head to the villa.

Final review model

This 1/200 scale model allows me to show how this building will begin to fit in its context and will begin to see how one might approach such a building but adjustments will be made for the final submission.

Image which defines my project.

This high quality image shows what i aim to achieve with the interior spaces. It begins to show the type of archive storage and where it might be and how certain quintili artefacts will be displayed. Most of all it shows how with the use of materials the spaces create a interesting free flowing interior experience.

Final review

As for the final review the scheme was at a level where i can fully begin to understand the issues that my design now has which will need to be address.

The simplification of the design created mass monumental voids which will be fit for the artefacts discovered on site. On the panel shows the type of spaces to expect in the building and allow the viewers a deeper in site to the experience that is expected.
There are issues to address at this stage for example the cafe seems out of place and the ventilation of the spaces will be important because of the glass roof. Overall progress in the design will continue.

Peterbogen – Juridicum Passage

This technical construction in Leipzig, Germany is a single layered cable net structure with cable trusses in the roof. Trusses with tension cables in the facade of two different building. The span of the roof is around 20 meters and is structurally sound. There for the consideration of this net structure in my design will be suitable where its biggest span is 14meters. The glass will be 2sqm laminated safety glass like the precedent shown however with the issues I have regarding the museum additional laminated layers will be added to create a more exterior reflective surface from the sunlight. The angle of the glass roof will be at an angle where the light is more likely to reflect. The interior will still be a little hotter in the summer therefore an environmental approach will be looked at to create a well ventilated and humidified space to be in.
